Saltfjord is set in a Norwegian fishing village and is loosely inspired by the dice-drafting mechanics of Santa Maria. However, it has been fully redesigned with new gameplay elements and expanded strategic options. To enhance replayability, each game includes variable setup elements, such as unique special abilities and end-game scoring tiles. Over the course of three rounds, players draft dice to activate buildings in their settlement. This generates resources and enables key actions like sending out fishing boats, developing technologies, completing trade contracts, or constructing new buildings. Each player board features a grid system: when a die is drafted, it activates all buildings in the corresponding row or column. Constructing new buildings increases the impact of each die used. The technology tracks unlock powerful abilities, including upgrades for your fishing boat. Fishing remains a vital part of life in Saltfjord, making it a central element of your strategy in every game.
